GenderCC's Governance

GenderCC Steering Group

GenderCC is led by a Steering Group of women from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Pacific Island States, North America and Europe. It has developed from a large circle of women and organizations participating in discussions and development of perspectives on gender and climate change over the years. Since 2007, the group has continually worked together and developed position papers on all key areas of climate change negotiations.

The Steering Group provides the main leadership for GenderCC; developed strategic plan and mission statement; oversees implementation; initiates monitoring and evaluation activities; invites additional members into the SG; oversees the work of the international secretariat, and represents GenderCC externally.

GenderCC Focal Points

GenderCC is working through regional Focal Points which aim at enhancing outreach into the regions; further anchoring GenderCC international activities in the realities of women and communities on the ground; providing avenues of channelling experiences and interests from local and regional to international level; and providing a vehicle for building learning platforms and exchange opportunities across regions and countries within GenderCC. Focal Points shall organize grass roots activities, such as campaigns, awareness building and education on adaptation and mitigation measures, technology cooperation and other issues, and facilitate exchange and mutual support among activists and across initiatives.

Board of Directors

The decision-making bodies of the association are the Executive Board and the General Member's Assembly. The General Member’s Assembly can appoint regional coordinating bodies and special committees.

The Board of the association is composed by three persons and is elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term. According to German law, the Board is formally responsible to ensure that all activities undertaken comply with the statutes of the association and with the German rules for accounting. Currently, the Board consists of

- Dorah Marema (chair),
- Minu Hemmati (vice chair),
- Gotelind Alber (treasurer),
Tereza Perez Rocha.

International Secretariat

The Steering Group, Focal Points and Board of Directors are assisted by an International Secretariat, currently located in Berlin, Germany, where the organisation is formally registered as a non-profit organisation.

The Secretariat acts as an administrator and central service point for the network. Staff and interns formally report to the Board of Directors, who are also Steering Committee members present in Berlin. The Secretariat's tasks include:

  • Raising funds for the whole of GenderCC and its various activities;
  • Supporting focal points in their activities, in particular in fundraising;
  • Organizing exchange among the focal points and developing a global learning platform for GenderCC;
  • Supporting outreach and media work;
  • Maintaining the knowledge platform gendercc.net and regularly updating it;
  • Reporting regularly to the Steering Committee about the activities of the Secretariat; and
  • Providing services for members.

The coordinator of the GenderCC network is Bettina Peifer. You can contact her at the International Secretariat via email or phone +49.30.21980088.
