GenderCC – Women for Climate Justice’s “Gender into Urban Climate Change Initiative” is a project which explores options for integrating gender and social aspects into climate policies in several pilot cities in India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa.

The project seeks to build capacity at local level and develop gender-responsive policy recommendations with the aim of strengthening citizens’ engagement in the planning and implementation processes of urban climate policies, and to enhance the effectiveness, inclusiveness and acceptance of local mitigation and adaptation action.

The project is currently applying the “Gender Assessment and Monitoring of Mitigation and Adaptation” (GAMMA) methodology in order to examine local adaptation and mitigation policies for their gender responsiveness, seeking to identify gender entry-points and develop recommendations for interventions needed to address gender gaps in planning procedures, priorities, policies and measures.

It is conducted in collaboration with All India Women’s Conference in India, Aksi! for gender, social and ecological justice and Solidaritas Perempuan in Indonesia, Equidad de Género: Ciudadanía, Trabajo y Familia in Mexico and GenderCC Southern Africa in South Africa. From 2018 to 2020, the application of the GAMMA methodology will be also piloted at the national level. Throughout the project, recommendations will be made targeting decision-makers in local and national governments, national and international city networks. By the end of the project, the GAMMA methodology will be accessible for any city or country interested in making their urban climate policies gender-just, sustainable and resilient.

The project was launched in 2015 and will run until 2020. It is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI), supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
