Gender and Climate Change Activities @ COP9 - Milan 2003

During COP9, LIFE e.V. in co-operation with ENERGIA and WECF hosted an informal meeting addressing the question: "Is gender an issue in climate change negotiations?"
It became the starting point for more extensive networking and advocacy for mainstreaming gender into the UNFCCC process. More than 30 people contributed their views and criticised the lack of gender awareness in the climate change process. They all were in agreement that gender had been a missing factor in the climate change negotiations and that action needs to be taken to make gender issues much more visible.

Additionally, an official side event titled "Promoting gender equality, providing energy solutions, preventing climate change" was hosted by the Women Environmental Ministers Network. Facilitated by Lena Sommestad (Sweden's Environmental Minister a the time), the panelists Aster Zaoude (Gender Specialist for the United Nations Development Programme), Fatima Denton (Gender and Energy Analyst for ENDA Tierre Monde in Senegal), Fatou Ndeye Gaye (Head of the Gambian delegation), and Hermann Ott (Wuppertal Institute) exchanged their ideas on gender aspects in particular in the field of energy policy and how to integrate these issues into the international climate change process.
