How to get gender-sensitive adaptation right

Gender-based climate strategies are superior, but simply including women in decision-making and using feminist rhetoric is not enough. This article discusses three principles to implement effective climate policy by accounting for the unique cultural positions of women and men. The first principle is that gender is not just about women — it’s about the underlying gender dynamics. The second one is that gender is not always about vulnerability. Women as well as men have knowledge, skills and a spirit of entrepreneurship that programmes need to capitalise on. The third is that gender-responsive approaches are not complicated, costly, or time-consuming. They are simply about changing the way of approaching project design and implementation processes.

If you are interested in learning more about these principles you should read the article by Jennifer Baunwoll who is a project coordinator for the UNDP-Canada Climate Adaptation Program.
