Women for Green Iraq platform established to promote gender in disaster risk reduction and environmental policies

During a training workshop in Iraq organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government a new platform called Women for Green Iraq was established. The platform will be tasked with promoting gender integration in environmental policies, with technical support from UNDP. It will be officially launched in early 2017. In addition, the workshop aimed at improving the understanding of the role of gender in disaster risk reduction (DRR), environment, and climate change. The training targeted 35 gender focal points from various ministries in Iraq, including the Ministry of Health and Environment and five Directors from the Environment Protection and Improvement Board (EPIB) of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Familiarized with gender-sensitive policies and programmes, the participants developed plans for mainstreaming gender and environment within their ministries and departments.
